A Potent Practice

(This was a note in my newsletter just before the holidays but since burnout and exhaustion certainly aren’t limited to that season, I thought I’d share it here and now too.)

In this extra busy season, when we can veer in the direction of exhaustion and burnout, I'm practicing giving in a way that feeds me - to be giving of myself instead of giving up myself. (And for me, it's definitely a practice - messy and imperfect and growth-oriented!)

The first (giving of) is sustainable and replenishing, the second (giving up) takes me to depletion. The first could be termed "otherish" and the second "selflessness".

So I ask myself:

  • What is feeding me and what is draining me?

  • And how can I tweak my choices moment to moment to steer in the direction of being fed as I give?

How could this practice help you manage your energy not your time right now?

Milisa

PS: Here's a post with more guidance about "otherishness" and inspiration from Adam Grant's book Give and Take as well as some more tips about how to be otherish in this season.
