Boundary-Setting Inspiration from Lord of the Rings

I’ve long struggled with setting boundaries, personally and professionally, in a way that is more compassionate and self-compassionate, rather than rigid and resentful. A perennial people pleaser, I’ve had to practise saying anything other than a full on “yes” when responding to a request. In this post I share a big shift I had around boundary-setting which has resulted in me feeling both encouraged and understood by my family when I need to take time to myself, to gather my strength and reconnect with my courage and clarity.

Hope You Enjoyed Mother’s Day

Hope You Enjoyed Mother’s Day

I hope you enjoyed some moments of goodness, even joy, yesterday, however and with whomever you celebrated.

I savoured some time outside in the backyard reading our book club choice this month, Bittersweet: How Sorrow and Longing Make Us Whole by Susan Cain. A highlight for me was taking in the beauty of our young magnolia tree, which is covered in blooms for the first time ever.

Celebrate? Right Now? Pardon?

I’ve had the concept of “celebrating” swirling around in my head for the last few weeks. It was an intuitive decision and since I made it, I’ve been trying catch up with my intuition about it. ("She" tends to be a bit more audacious than the regular "me". :-)) I’ve been asking myself, why was it so important to celebrate, in this very difficult year, of all years?

Do You Believe in Synchronicities?

Do you believe in synchronicities? (I do. I want to make empowered meaning wherever I can get it!) I want to share a very fresh synchronicity – it just happened a few minutes ago. So, as you may know, I am hosting the first ever Making Room For YOU Circle tomorrow night. And, I have been planning on using the brilliant Claire Zammit’s Feminine Power visioning circle outline as the main structure for the Circle. It’s what I have used for the last two years and it is hugely effective.

Savouring - A Very Pleasant and Effective Tool for Success!

Savouring is a positive psychology "happiness intervention", meaning that finding ways to savour the joys in life has been shown to lead to increased happiness and well-being. And studies have also shown that increased happiness and well-being lead to more success in life - and not the other way around as many of us assume.

Unexpected Gratitude

The other day I was working at a café here in Toronto, with a view through the window into the climbing gym where my youngest was in an after-school program. This has been our weekly routine for some months now and it is working beautifully. As I sat there, feeling stressed by what was on my plate, I felt a huge wave of gratitude come over me.

What Are You Proud Of?

What are you proud of? Tap into your pride and have more energy to contribute in a socially valuable way! Over and over again, women tell me that they want to feel proud of their life and work. And yet, so many women are hesitant to share what they are proud of for fear of looking like they are bragging or showing hubris (excessive pride).

The Story of the Horse, the Monkey and the Bird

The Story of the Horse, the Monkey and the Bird

This is the story of the horse, the monkey and the bird. I took them all to Texas with me to a coaches' conference back in 2010. In fact, I take them everywhere with me. They are me. They represent my mind (the monkey), my body (the horse) and my spirit (the bird). They really came to life for me while I was on the treadmill at about 6 am one morning during this conference.

Game-Changing Questions for Family Life (Hint: Fun is Involved)

It’s been four years since I read a book that changed the life of our family for the better. Much better. The book is Honey I Wrecked the Kids: When Yelling, Screaming, Threats, Bribes, Time-outs, Sticker Charts and Removing Privileges All Don’t Work by Alyson Schafer. I picked it up in a time of need over the Christmas holidays. I was looking for help in my parenting of my youngest son.
