It’s Time for Us to Be Smarter with These Big Feelings
These times are providing an opportunity for us to grow and become more emotionally intelligent. Emotional intelligence is about being smarter with our feelings, bringing our cognition and our feelings together. (Definition from SixSeconds.org) Our feelings are important data to take in; we ignore them at our peril.
More About Love 2.0 - It's So Important!
Previously, I shared a message about the re-definition of love, sourced from research by the brilliant Dr. Barbara Fredrickson and her team and set out in Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do and Become (2012). This note builds on the ideas in a bit more detail - they are so important for us to take in as we become more and more immersed in our virtual worlds. The research contained in Love 2.0 emphasizes the importance of being together in flesh and blood. In fact, being together in person is a requirement of Love 2.0. The in-person requirement is what I want to highlight here.
Love 2.0 - A Super Powerful Re-Definition of Love
On Valentine’s Day, when the focus is on romantic love, I want to deliver a message about a re-definition of Love, sourced from research by the brilliant Dr. Barbara Fredrickson and her team. Dr. Fredrickson is a pre-eminent authority on “positive emotions”, where Love reigns supreme. She is the author of Love 2.0: How Our Supreme Emotion Affects Everything We Feel, Think, Do and Become (2012), as well as Positivity (which I blogged about years ago).
What Are You Proud Of?
What are you proud of? Tap into your pride and have more energy to contribute in a socially valuable way! Over and over again, women tell me that they want to feel proud of their life and work. And yet, so many women are hesitant to share what they are proud of for fear of looking like they are bragging or showing hubris (excessive pride).
Feeling the Pull Toward Something Greater in a Mystical Landscape
I went with my family to see Mystical Landscapes: Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh & More at the AGO this past Sunday. The exhibition explores the mystical experiences in nature of 37 different artists. It was a gorgeous (if crowded!) experience. I was so inspired. At one point we were encouraged to focus on one of Charles-Marie Dulac’s works and just sit and be mindful, noticing what we saw.
More Joy – From Natasha Bedingfield’s Song “Unwritten”
I am not on top of pop culture – I rely on my family to keep me up to date, so I only really noticed this song: Unwritten, by Natasha Bedingfield (2004), in November when it was played as part of the Feminine Power Mastery course I am taking. I loved the song as soon as I heard a part of it.
Want to Move from Dread to Enjoyment? Be Inspired by this Story
Is there a part of your work, your home or your community life that you dread on a regular basis? Wouldn’t it be wonderful to shift out of the dread to something more positive… dare we even say, to shift from dread to enjoyment?
A Growth Mindset: Why We All Need One
Do you ever feel so tired and frustrated that you are just in survival mode, getting from one day to the next, or even one hour to the next?
Are You Exhausted from Giving? Inspiration from "Give and Take" by Adam Grant
Do you ever feel exhausted from giving so much to others without considering yourself enough in the equation? If so, you are not alone and this post is really for you. It contains good news! It doesn’t have to be an “either/or” thing – give to others or give to yourself.
Rose Coloured Lenses? Yes… and So Much More!
When something good happens to you, do you routinely say: "I was just lucky", or quickly see who else you can give credit to for that good thing? When something bad happens to you, do you usually chastise yourself about it and then think about how often this kind of thing happens to you?
Where's Our Passion?
Have you ever yearned to find more passion, or even some passion, in your work? Reading Lean In: Women, Work and The Will To Lead by Sheryl Sandberg over March Break made me remember an experience when I so strongly felt that yearning.
Inspiration on the Bunny Hill
When I was a very little girl, age 3, my Dad, Dr. Wilson Rodger, taught me to downhill ski. I had tiny red wooden skis and a bit of an attitude. Lucky us: we had a wee but perfect hill for learning to ski a 10 minute ride away - the London Ski Club, affectionately known as the "Byron Bump".
More Than Just A Plum Pudding
For as long as I can remember, my maternal grandmother, Mildred Maclean ("DD" to me), would make the plum pudding for our Christmas dinner. A few years ago, when she was well into her 90s, I took over the role of plum pudding maker.
Yes!
It's been almost a year since I began focusing on managing energy not time in many of my posts (see Managing Energy Not Time - Refuelling at the Dog Park, which was the first post). I have really enjoyed having that as an overarching theme, since it is integral to how I live my life and how I approach my coaching practice.
What Do I Want For This Relationship?
First a little background. This blog post is based on an email I recently sent out in gratitude to the participants of the Making Room For You Assessment. The focus of this email I sent out was on learning how to manage relationships better, both personal and professional. Here's what I said.
Something Lost, More Found
My family and I were lucky enough to be able to go to Florida last week for March Break. We had a really lovely holiday; lots of good "family of five" time as well as fun times with grandparents and a great aunt and great uncle. We arrived quite exhausted and left much more relaxed.
Do You Have Worry Cup or A Cup of Concern?
This post explores "worry" versus "concern" and connects these ideas with exciting research on positive emotions. Remember, I have been loosely exploring managing our energy not our time since the summer and this post fits with managing our emotional energy.
Carrying Heavy Loads and Smiling Plastic Smiles in Vegas
I love when my kids' story books make me think. In Zen Shorts by Jon J. Muth, a panda bear tells some children the story of two monks, an older one and a younger one, on a journey. At one point they come across a rich and haughty young woman who demands that they carry her across some water so she won't get wet.
Managing Energy Not Time - Refuelling at the Dog Park
This is my dog, Raska. (She is named after the Ganaraska River and Forest near our cottage). Raska is partly responsible for helping manage my energy, and not my time, and thus helps me be more "sustainable".
DD is 100 Years Old Today! What's Her Secret?
Happy Birthday to DD who is 100 years old today! And happy 100th Anniversary of International Women's Day! Below is the speech I made this past Sunday at a party for my maternal grandmother, Mildred Maclean ("DD"), who is 100 years old today.
